eBook Reader Comparison – Sony Vs Amazon

The eBook Reader saga continues.  Here is an ebook reader comparison of the top two models.  Sony came out with the PRS-700 in November of 2008 in time for the Christmas rush and just ahead of the 2nd generation Kindle by Amazon.com.  This new version Kindle 2 is sleeker and a has better profile than its predecessor.  It has a 25% longer battery life and a better keyboard giving it more sexual appeal.  Both devices use the same E-ink electronic paper display.

The biggest difference between the two handheld ebook readers is the availability of wireless connectivity.  Kindle 2 uses Sprint’s EVDO wireless data network to search and download books. Its basic web browsing feature makes it a more powerful device. While the Sony PRS-700 users have to connect with a USB cable to a computer with an internet connection.  It’s a cumbersome process and its the one area where the Kindle truly rules. They both have the same size 6 inch screen.  The Sony PRS-700BC has a touchscreen display similar to cell phones like the iPhone and Blackberry Storm, for easy page turning.  See the chart below for a more detailed ebook reader comparison.

The one main advantage that the Sony PRS-700 has over the Amazon Kindle 2 is price.  The PRS-700BC is $279 while the Kindle 2 is $359.
