Sony Starts The eBook Reader Price War
The heat in the air this past August was not spurred on by the dog day afternoon temperatures, but by the latest news from the ebook readers market. Three new ebook reader models priced to under cut Amazon’s Kindles will be released by Sony in the coming months. Two of the models, priced in the $200 range will be released in September in time for the start of school, and one in the $300 range will be ready for Christmas sales. The ebook reader price war has begun.
On Tuesday August 25th at the main branch of the New York Public Library, Steven Haber, president of Sony’s digital reader business division unveiled the readers with an additional heat wave of other news. Sony, in partnership with Overdrive.com devloped a Library Finder application, which Sony eBook Store users can use to download free ebook content from their local libraries with a library card. The content expires at the end of the lending period. Haber also announced that Sony is changing its ebook format to the portable ePub format, which coinsides with Google’s release of more than one million books in the same ePub format. This format is also compatible with other ebook readers and Apple’s iPhone.
The new portable ebook reader models were developed for affordability. The Pocket Edition, priced at $199, has a compact 5″ display and can be easily navigated with one hand. For an additional $100 there is the Touch Edition which comes with swipe navigation and stylus input for note taking or virtual keyboard typing. The Touch Edition also has the Oxford American English Dictionary on board for quick word definition lookup. Both models come with 512 MB of memory and according to Sony have enough battery life for 7,500 page turns or for approximately two weeks. They also come with protective sleeves and USB cables for recharging. Each of these ebook readers employs the E Ink Vizplex electronic paper display. The Daily Edition, which will be out by December at a price of $399, is Sony’s 3G wireless model by way of AT&tTs mobile broadband network. This model has a 7″ touchscreen with a high contrast ratio with 16 grayscale levels.
More and more people are using the new portable reading devices to access all types of digital books. With the use of the ePub format and the many new readers that are coming out like Sony’s three new models the future looks bright for the ebook reader market. This is just the start of the ebook reader price war. We will soon see much lower prices for ebook readers with many more options such as Facebook and Twitter integration.
